A Note to Lurkers

Lurkers - come out, come out wherever you are!

So I have this fun little tracking meter on my blog. It tells me all kinds of wonderful things like who comes to visit Journey-2-Peace, what city they're in, what time and how long they visit, how many times, which pages and the funnest part of all, their ISP and IP address!

Very fun indeed.

There are hundreds (thousands) of returning visitors from all over the world - yet I only receive a handful of comments and a bucketful of emails. Something doesn't add up.

(anyone denote the hint of sarcasm?)

Hey, I can understand what it means to be a lurker. There's a lurker in all of us. I'm okay with it really. My hope is that you are here with good intentions. Otherwise, it's just a setup for pain. Why go through that? It's unnecessary.

Yes, this is a public blog. Yes, I choose what to share and what not to share. And for a long time now I've been very conscious of some frequent lurking. There's no reason -- except to see what's going on in the lives of those around me. So I censor myself greatly.

I've watched my language (for the most part). I've kept those closest to me out of the spotlight (for the most part). And I've chosen to NOT share some great and not-so-great things knowing there are little birdies watching.

They think I don't know. It's been said that they think I don't know anything.

So why come here then?

Now for the blanket responses I've heard:
"Well, if you don't want anyone to know, why keep a public blog?"
"Don't write it if you don't want to get hurt."
(and my personal favorite) "You're asking for it."

This is a new age. The word "blog" just made it into the dictionary less than two years ago. There are no rules or laws YET to justify or validate a blogger's decision to blog.

What do I mean?

When I hear those blanket responses, I think of not-too-long ago when girls wearing mini skirts "were just asking to get raped." A woman (or man) should be able to run the streets naked without the fear of being attacked. Today we know this! Well we should know it.

I think the same goes for bloggers. We should be able to put our hearts on(the)line without the fear of being attacked.

A note to lurkers: Considering outing yourself, this is the safest place to do it. ;) If you have questions, ask. If you have a blog, leave a link. If you don't, leave a comment. Introduce yourself...or not. It's fine to lurk - but don't kid yourself thinking I don't know when you're here. No smoke and mirrors -- just common sense.

A note to all J2P visitors: Read at your own risk. My heart is about to burst open - if you don't want to know, don't read. Save yourself.

~peace all~

Yikes! That's kinda creepy, but I don't mind you knowing I stopped by. I'll make sure I have pants on the next time.

On a lighter note, how the hell does anyone ever learn to play the guitar? I've been at it for a month now and I just plain stink. It's definitely putting a crimp in my musician ego. Maybe I'll just drown my sorrows in the purchase of a new shiny trumpet and let my fingertips heal.

You know what happens? I hop on line and hit the bloglines and when I feel like I need to comment I realized I am not signed in to Blogger. And I think, "oh well"....a good read about your subject that made me laugh out loud!

Blogger Donna said ... (3:57 AM) :

I've been reading your blogs since before you left AOL. I'm not much of a commenter, unless I really have something to say.

I hate the ads and pay-per-posts, by the way. But you gotta do what you must to survive.

i read.
i mostly lurk.
but i'm here.

i have a counter too.
i wish more people would just
comment. but i must practice
what i want to preach, kwim?

Blogger Robbie said ... (6:08 AM) :

Darn it! I hate the pressure to conform. I admit, even I have been a lurker. You know, sometimes, a person just doesn't have anything to say.

And, since we're coming out of the closet, I'm with Donna on hating the ads and pay-per-posts, so most of the time I read you through Bloglines so I can skip over those.

All right All right, I admit it. I lurk. And i lurk because your emails with updates come to my inbox and I always come by and read whats happening with you and your life. ;) And i dont comment as frequently as i should... Ill have to get better about that.... Feel free to come by my myspace since that is my primary blog.... ;) ;)

Cousin M - yay, nice to hear/read from you. Yes, I do know you're here - and I'm glad we at least have this to keep tabs. Now, where's YOUR blog??? OMG, yours would be so much fun! Bring it on woman!

I mostly lurk :-)
I use Google Analytics with visitor tracking to my blogs. It's free and has pretty flash based graphs.

Steven - thanks for the info - I'm on my way to check it out. I'm a huge google supporter.

Hi, Trish--

Responding here rather than back in the Health Insurance post. Good memory you have!!! Yes, still subtitling. Not at yoga much...ugh. But I am working out regularly twice a week with a I want to squeeze in one yoga class a week. We'll see. Also joined my Neighborhood Council, which takes up A LOT of time. There you have it!!

Blogger gigi said ... (5:55 PM) :

Okay, okay! You got me. I've been busy, and yada yada yada. Besides, bloglines isn't really lurking. It's just lazy.

I'd settle for a lurker or two. The tracking software is fun ~ I traced a hit to some guy in Saudi Arabia who did a search for "lotus+turk+yoga" or something. Turns out, all the other matches were for Turkish porn sites! Who knew? ;D

That must have been one disappointed Arab.
